The Health Law Partners (HLP) is proud to be part of the upcoming Physician Legal Issues Conference co-sponsored by the American Bar Association Health Law Section and Chicago Medical Society.  The conference will take place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago on June 8-9, 2017. Adrienne Dresevic, Esq., a founding partner of the HLP, is Co-Chairing the conference this year. Abby Pendleton, Esq., a founding partner of the HLP, will be a featured speaker at the conference. Ms. Pendleton’s speech is titled, Your Practice is Being Audited: Complying, Fighting and Winning. Her session addresses key issues when facing an audit including: appeals processes and auditors’ concepts, considerations affecting the decision to appeal, successful strategies for appeals, and using the audit to enhance future compliance. The Health Law Partners' is pleased to announce that Founding Partner, Adrienne Dresevic, will be co-teaching Pharmaceutical Fraud and Abuse (PHA 6290) for the University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy for the Fall 2016 semester. This course provides an overview of the False Claims Act, the Qui Tam action, and Stark Laws, within an overall framework of the prevention of fraud, abuse and waste primarily within the Medicare and Medicaid programs, as well as private healthcare plans. The course includes comprehensive guidance on the methods through which healthcare plans conduce auditing and fraud detection, with advice on the development and implementation of an internal audit and fraud detection program to prevent violations of healthcare plan policies. The course reviews data mapping and data mining as tools to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of fraud investigations. Class discussions take the perspective of clinical practice, research, internal auditor and compliance officer. Cases and methodologies are provided to demonstrate actual auditing and investigative tools . The University of Florida Pharm.D. curriculum prepares graduates in pharmacy to take independent professional responsibility for the outcome of drug therapy in patients.  Ms. Dresevic is excited to be an integral part of the University of Florida teaching team.

ADRIENNE DRESEVIC AND CLINTON MIKEL EARN THE "PULITZER PRIZE" OF LEGAL WRITING

Please join The Health Law Partners, P.C., in congratulating Adrienne Dresevic (a Founding Shareholder), and Clinton Mikel (a Partner), for earning what has been described as the "Pulitzer Prize of Legal Writing".

The Burton Award for Distinguished Legal Writing, which is run in association with the Library of Congress and co-sponsored by the American Bar Association, is earned each year by 35 exceptional authors nationwide.

Submissions for the Distinguished Legal Writing Award are extremely competitive. The award is generally selected by professors from Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, Stanford Law School, and Columbia Law School, among others.

This year, Adrienne Dresevic and Clinton Mikel join this distinguished group of authors for their journal article titled "Final CY 2016 Stark Law Changes--Welcomed Revisions to Stark". Their article was published in the December issue of the American Bar Association's peer-reviewed Health Lawyer publication (the flagship publication of the ABA's Health Law Section) - it meticulously dissects major revisions to the Physician Self-Referral Law (Stark Law).

The Burton Awards will be held in Washington D.C. on May 23, 2016. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will be the featured guest speaker and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will memorialize Justice Scalia during the program.

Lori A. LaSalle has been appointed to serve on the SHIN-NY Policy Committee.  Partnering with the New York State Department of Health, the New York eHealth Collaborative (NYeC) committee announced the formation and membership of the Statewide Health Information Network on New York (SHINY-NY) Policy Committee.  The committee is responsible for developing statewide policy governing the electronic exchange of health information between unrelated organizations via a Health Information Exchange (HIE).  Ms. LaSalle is one of two healthcare attorneys currently serving on the policy committee's board.
